Meet with other Martial Artists and Styles for learning, workout and fun
FAQQ: How much do you charge, and what's the catch? To be clear, participation in this meetup is FREE! You will not be asked to pay any money to join, or participate at this time. The catch? To eliminate costs and make this accessable to all budgets, we do not have an indoor facility, and meet up outdoors at a local park.
Q: How often does the group meet? The group tries to meet every week. Be sure to RSVP and check this website for any updates on days, times or location. If you are not sure, feel free to contact the group organizers by clicking the link on the left side of the page.
Q: What should I wear?
- Comfortable Athletic/Workout wear (e.g., T-Shirt(s) or rash guard(s), Sweat pants or board shorts, athletic shoes)
- Bring something warm to wear after your workout (e.g. sweatshirt)
- Martial Arts Gi is ok if you prefer
Q: What should I bring?
- Bottled water or sports drink to stay hydrated during your workout
- Protective gear if you have any (e.g. mouth guard, athletic protector, shin guards, bag gloves). These are not essential for beginners who do not wish to advance to progressive resistance and contact, but highly recommended if agreed upon contact is harder. Such equipment can be purchased at most sporting goods stores such as Big Five, Sports Authority, Sports Chalet, etc.
- If you have training gear (e.g., kicking shields, focus mitts, thai pads, others), feel free to bring them if you don't mind sharing with the group.
- An open mind!
Q: What if I am a beginner? This group is geared toward the intermediate to advance maritial arts practitioners. Our sister-meetup group is better suited to beginning practitioners.
OC Martial Arts/Self-Defense - Beginners. While our two groups will frequently meet at the same time and practice location, there will be some meetups that are specifically for intermediate and advance practitioners.
Q: Can I invite friends? If you plan to invite friends, please remember to indicate when you RSVP. If it's a last minute decision, just bring them along. As a courtesy to others in the group, be sure to brief your friends regarding safety. A fun casual environment for all levels is what we aim for, and unacceptable behavior such as bullying is neither invited nor tolerated.
Q: What is the format of the work out? While the format will primarily be determined by the group that shows up at each session, this is an example of a general format of what we may be practicing:
- Arrive a little bit early so you can warm up and stretch
- Dynamic Distancing: Hitting/kicking/pushing drills against kicking shields, focus mits, etc.
- Light person-to-person positional contact drills (counters against strikes, grabs/throws/locks/submissions etc.)
- Scenario/situational drills (backed to a wall, surprise attack, multiple opponents, simulated armed assault defences, escapes etc.)
- Break out into pairs or small groups and work on whatever you and your partner(s) decide.
Always remember, SAFETY First! Keep yourself and your partner(s) safe so you can practice again next week!
Q: Why is it important to RSVP?When you RSVP, that sets an example for others to follow. When others see that there are people participating, they will also more likely to participate. This will help keep the group active and your martial arts colleagues interested.
Q: Will there still be work out if it is raining? An alternate covered location will be posted on the website. Unless it's really raining "cats and dogs," practice will continue.
